Margaret Kilgore Brown, 101, of Anderson, SC, passed away Monday, April 26, 2021, at her home.

Born December 21, 1919, in Anderson, SC, she was the daughter of the late Lessie Elrod Kilgore and Joseph C. Kilgore, and the widow of the late James Wesley “Jay” Brown, Jr.

Margaret grew up spending most of her spare time with her doting aunts and uncles on a sprawling farm, where she embraced country living. After completing her degree at Anderson College, she served her country prior to and during World War II as a civilian with the Navy in Washington, DC and Charleston, SC. She was one of the top expert shorthand specialists and was assistant to the head of the Naval Base in Charleston until her marriage.

She was a long-time member of Flat Rock Baptist Church, where she was employed as church secretary for 55 years until she retired at age 95. She loved nature and gardening, caring for her cats and dogs, reading, doing crossword puzzles, dancing to big band music, denouncing politicians, and serving her beloved church. She will be remembered as a valuer of independence and knowledge.

She is survived by her daughter Lynn Hamer of the home, son Wes Brown (Chase) of San Diego, her adored grandson James Hamer of Pendleton, and many nieces and nephews. In addition, she is missed greatly by her special feline companions Yellow Fred and Moxie.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brothers Ralph, George, and Howard.

The family wishes to thank Hospice Care of SC, who provided a wonderful team for Margaret. Her long-time CNA Clarice Richardson always delivered first-rate care, combined with concern and kindness. Also, Stephanie Fisher and her children Zoey and Zander provided much support and assistance during Margaret’s final months.

Margaret is interred at Flat Rock Baptist Church cemetery in Anderson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Anderson County Humane Society or Anderson County P.A.W.S.
