Obituary for Steve Wilson

Steve Wilson
August 24,1962 - October 22, 2022

Stephen Larry Wilson, 60, of Starr, SC, passed away on October 22, 2022, due to the result of injuries he received from an impaired driver on January 1, 2009.

A son of the late Larry and Carolyn Wilson, Steve was born and raised in Anderson, S.C. Like his father. Steve graviated towards music and guitars at an early age. A self-appointed rescuer of abandoned and neglected guitars, Steve searched garage sales and thrift stories for restorable guitars and brought them back to life. In addition to guitars, Steve loved antique cars, fishing, NASCAR, cooking, and southern rock.

Some years ago, Steve moved to South Bend, Indiana, where he embraced ice fishing, snow, and the Fighting Irish, excluding when they played against Clemson, of course. Artistically inclined, Steve hand-painted intricate exterior designs on tour buses belonging to major music stars and very high-end RVs until he could not continue his career due to health issues.

Steve recently moved back to his hometown of Anderson to be closer to his family and friends.

Steve's life changed forever on January 1, 2009, when a driver high on drugs impacted his vehicle, taking his mother's life and inflicting severe injuries on Steve. While he survived, Steve never regained his health and endured frequent hospitalizations. The impaired driver was incarcerated for over twelve years, exchanging the opportunity to raise her own child for prison. By sharing this information, our family hopes that anyone struggling with addiction will seek help and avoid driving while impaired.

In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Steve Sanders.

Steve is survived by his sister, Catherine Sanders, his brothers, Ken Wilson (Donna) and Roger Wilson, five nephews, and his aunts and uncles, Doug and Lisa Ivester and Jerry and Ann Kyzer.

A memorial service will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel Remembrance II with Rev. Steve Silvey officiating on Friday, October 28, 2022, at 11:00 am.

Steve had many friends across the USA and other countries. If you are unable to attend Steve’s service, please consider taking a few moments during the service time to listen to what Steve considered to be the greatest guitar song of all time, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s ‘Free Bird.’

Due to the nature of the on-site service, the family regrets that we cannot accept flowers.

However, if you'd like to remember Steve, he was a supporter of a young photographer, Anthony Schmidt. You can see Anthony's work at https://anthonyryanschmidt.com/ or become a patron by clicking https://www.patreon.com/AnthonySchmidt. The family will not be notified, but we believe Steve will know of your support.

Dearest Steve - we will always remember you - fly high, free bird.
