Obituary for Leonard E. Hanks

(Leonard Hanks) Leonard E. Hanks, 97, husband of Betty Wells Hanks, of Anderson, died Thursday, April 6, 2023, at his home.

Born in Anderson, on October 14, 1925, he was a son of the late John Fleet Hanks, and the late Rachel Janie Saylors Hanks.

Mr. Hanks served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and returned to Anderson to start his career in homebuilding. He was the owner of L.E. Hanks Construction Company for many years, and built over 250 homes in the Anderson Area. He was a charter member of Forest Hill Baptist Church where he faithfully served as Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent.

He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Betty Wells Hanks, daughter, Betsy Hanks Donaldson and her husband Dr. William Donaldson, and grandchildren, Hank Donaldson and Janie Donaldson.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Pearl Hawkins, Laura Cromer, and Frank Hanks.
He was also preceded in death by his special nephew, Donnie Ray Hanks.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00am, on Monday, April 10, 2023, at Forest Hill Baptist Church, 909 Plantation Rd., Anderson, S.C. 29621. Rev. Tom Owen will officiate, and burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with military honors by the U.S. Army.

The family will receive friends at the church, prior to the service, from 10:00am – 11:00am. They will also speak to attendees following the graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Forest Hill Baptist Church, or to the charity of one’s choice.
