Obituary

Joseph P. Saunders
June 17, 1947 – November 14, 2020

Joseph Patrick Saunders, 73, of Piedmont, SC, and formerly of Rocky Point, NY, passed away suddenly at his home on November 14, 2020.

Beloved husband of Kathy, they had just celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary in September. Loving father of Erin Saunders-Morano and her husband Michael, Colleen Marie Saunders and Kate Saunders. Cherished Papa of Sofia, Patrick, Lauren and Matthew.

In addition, Joe is survived by his sister, Mary Talercio (Gene), brother Raymond Saunders (Mia), and brothers John Saunders and James Saunders. Joe leaves behind nieces and nephews: Louis Talercio, Mary Beth Galarneau (Eric), Mark Talercio, Michael Saunders, Cara Poole (Tim), Michael Saunders (Elaine), LeeAnn Jeanpierre, and Rose Saunders, as well as five great-nieces and six great-nephews. He is predeceased by his nephew Glenn Saunders.

Joe was the son of the late Anne V. Saunders and the late Retired Colonel Raymond W. Saunders. He was born in the Bronx, and moved around as an Army brat. His mother moved the family to their summer home in Sound Beach, NY, in 1954. He was a 1965 graduate of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in Port Jefferson, NY.

After his service in the U.S. Army, where he rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant, he became a Journeyman Electrician for IBEW Local 25 of Long Island, NY, and served in that capacity for 40 years. He was an active member of the Local for over 50 years.

Joe learned to play the bagpipes, and was an avid bagpiper for Local 25. He played at numerous events and marched in many parades, including the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Joe also had a great love and knowledge of history, especially the Civil War. When asked an historical question, Joe could go on for hours explaining details and nuances that only accomplished historians would know. He could never pass an historical marker without stopping to read it. Joe was always up for a good conversation, and loved talking with just about anyone on any number of topics. He always made people feel heard and understood.

Joe was a great man with a kind heart and was always quick to offer his well-thought out guidance to anyone who asked. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

We are so sorry to hear about the sudden loss of Joe, who was a great guy, great cousin, great bagpiper and great storyteller! We looked forward to seeing him annually when he marched in the Huntington St Paddy’s Day parade.
Joe always made an effort to join our family get togethers and although we remember quite a few that he attended (especially our Mom’s 90th and more recent Long Island cousins gathering), they were far too few!
Heartfelt condolences to Kathy & all of the Saunders,
Matt & Jean McKinley
