Obituary

Starr, S.C.
(J.C. Martin) John Chesley Martin was proud to live to be 101 years old! He was the husband of the late Nita Duncan Martin of the Flat Rock Community of Starr, and died Tuesday, April 27, 2021 in Anderson.

Born in Anderson on March 1, 1920, he was a son of the late Chesley Leroy Martin and the late Lena Maddox Martin.

After Anderson Boy’s High School, Mr. Martin served in the U.S. Army during WW-II. He returned to Anderson County and settled, with his family, in the Flat Rock Community of Starr. For 34 years he worked with Duke Power Co., where he retired as District Supervisor. He was a faithful Christian who loved to share his faith with everyone he came in contact with. He was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church for over 63 years and taught the Men’s Sunday School Class during his entire membership. He was a Gideon, a Mason and a Shriner and served as a trustee of the old Flat Rock Schoolhouse.

Mr. J.C. was also well-known in the Flat Rock Community for his beautiful vegetable garden that he planted and tended to every year up until recently. He loved to share “what The Lord had given him” with his family and friends.

He is survived by his son, John Chessley Martin Jr. (Margie), daughter, Terry Trotter, grandson, Chess Martin (Chastity), granddaughter, Erin Martin Hanks (Jason), 7 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

He is also survived by his siblings, Walter Martin (Dorcas), Margaret Ellis (Jim), Lucille Wilson, and Nan Busha.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Nita Duncan Martin, granddaughter Rana Trotter Masters and siblings, Elizabeth Brooks, Fred Leroy Martin, Ann Sexton and Joe I. Martin.

A funeral service to celebrate his long life will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at 2:00pm at Flat Rock Baptist Church, Flat Rock Rd. Starr, S.C. Rev. Ed Hunsinger and Rev. Tony Smith will officiate. He will be buried beside his wife at Flat Rock Cemetery.

The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary prior to the service from 12:30pm – 2:00pm.
