Obituary for John Looney
(John Looney) John Lee Looney, 94, husband of Louise Smith Looney, of Lake Secession, Iva, S.C., died Saturday, April 22, 2023, at AnMed Health Medical Center.
Born in Royston, Georgia, on August 8, 1928, he was a son of the late Joseph Charles Looney and the late Rhoda Bryant Looney.
John was a U.S. Army Veteran and was the retired owner/operator of S&L Body Shop on Hwy 28 Bypass in Anderson. He was an active member of Rocky River Baptist Church in Iva, where he was a former Deacon and former member of the Building and Grounds Committee.
For over 40 years, he was a Master Mason and member of the Iva Masonic Lodge # 238. He was also a Past Patron of The Order of The Eastern Star in Iva, and a Hejaz Shriner.
John was a well-known and well-loved man in the Lake Secession and Iva area. He enjoyed long conversations, especially talking about “the good ‘ole days”! He loved living on the lake and fishing the waters. Working in his yard and his vegetable garden brought him much joy, and he even planted this year’s tomato plants the day before his death. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Louise Smith Looney, his daughter, Susan Hall (Fant), his grandchildren; Johnathan Looney, Nancy Looney (Kenneth Driver), Wayne Tice (Tammy), and Scarlett Hall, 5 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, as well as his beloved chihuahua-Monk.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Ralph Lee Looney, his daughter, Barbara Ann Tice, and his 5 siblings.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at Rocky River Baptist Church, 3234 Lake Secession Rd., Iva, S.C. 29655. Rev. Dale Cross will officiate, and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church, prior to the funeral, from 1:00pm – 2:00pm.
