Obituary for John Charping Jr.

John Charping
May 30, 1940- March 24, 2023

John Luther Charping Jr., age 82, of Fairplay, SC, died Friday, March 24, 2023, at his home.

Born in Greenville, SC, he was the son of the late John Luther Charping Sr., and the late Mary Kay Charping.

John served his country for 6 years in the United States Airforce and was deployed to Vietnam. He ultimately retired from the Army National Guard as a sharpshooter. After his time in the Airforce, John became a commercial airline pilot. He later worked as a Greenville City Police officer, and as a custom home builder in the upstate for many years. His passion was telling people about Jesus and serving through missions. John was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church and directed multiple mission trips through the church. He loved to ride his ATV through the Kentucky coal mine mountains, eating chocolate ice cream, and reeling people in while telling jokes.

John is survived by his wife of 25 years, Linda Charping, along with children, Gwendolyn Pollard of Easley, SC, Dr. John Paul Charping (Stephanie) of Cordova, TN, Marty Holler (Dean) of Rock Hill, SC, Tammy Arceneaux of Bremerton, WA, Billy Ray Arceneaux of Mauldin, SC, and his stepson, Christopher Westmoreland. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and his brother in law Jimmy Chambers.

Along with his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Francis Chambers.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Oakdale Baptist Church for their continued support of the family, to the ROCU unit at AnMed Health Medical Center for the tenderness and respect they showed to John that made him look forward to his weekly visits, and to Stacey Dodgins, for her love and support during John’s illness.

The family will host a memorial service at 11am, Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Oakdale Baptist Church, 6724 SC-24, Townville, SC 29689. Rev. David Blizzard will officiate.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 9am until 11.

The family requests that anyone who has served on missions with John, either internationally or locally to serve as honorary escorts.

The burial will take place on a later date at M.J. "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery.
