Obituary for Greg Johnson

Greg Johnson
March 19, 1951 – May 8, 2022

Gregory Scott Johnson, 71, of Pendleton, SC, passed away at AnMed Health in Anderson, SC, on May 8, 2022, due to complications of cancer.

Greg was the son of the late AB Johnson and the late Katherine “Kitty” Johnson.

He is survived by his wife, Gayle Johnson, daughter, Kelly Trott (Stephen), his son, Scott Johnson (Margo), and his two grandchildren; Russell & Aurora. He is also survived by his sister, Amy Hitchens (Peter), two nephews; Bowman & Palmer, and niece, Hollis.

Greg was born and grew up in Asheville, N.C. He graduated from Lee Edwards High School (now Asheville High) and was very active in All Souls Cathedral. He spent many afternoons & evenings working in the productions at The Tangle Wood Theatre where his mother was the pianist.

Greg had several jobs before & after college. Before college one of his jobs was working in construction in Asheville where he was part of the crew that replaced the roofing tiles on the Cathedral. While Greg was hard at work, high up on the steep pitched roof, one of the heavy tiles slid off from above, hit him in the face and cut his nose. He had the scar for the rest of life.

He was thrilled to be able to buy a 1965 straight drive gold Mustang which he drove everywhere. He proudly attended Clemson University, his father’s alma mater.

He spent his career in construction specializing in windows and building homes.

Greg enjoyed time in the hot tub, going to the beach, and above all Clemson football. He would also make it known how he would never miss a home game, no matter what. And woe to anyone who made him late to arriving 3 hours before a game!

A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, May 13, 2022, at 2:00 pm in The Tribute Room of The Standard Cremation & Funeral Center, 1621 Pearman Dairy Road, Anderson, SC 29625. The family will speak with friends following the service.
