Obituary for George Newby

George Newby
August 21, 1947- October 8, 2022

Mr. George Rand Newby, 75, and a Vietnam Veteran (Army), passed into the next world on Saturday October 8th, after battling cancer.

George was a Captain in the United States Army, and received two bronze stars in addition to other awards for his service during the Vietnam War. The friends he made during the war, and their families held a special place in his heart. He loved his family, smoking cigars, and country music. He was a life-long Braves fan. Like all good Braves fans, he loved to hate the Mets. There were no strangers in George’s life; he would talk to anyone, anytime, anywhere. He prided himself on sticking up for people. He would give you the shirt off his back.

He leaves behind his two daughters, Celeste (Chayan) and Rachel (Michelle) and their families, grandchildren Aidan and Taylor, his brother Chris, sisters Karen, Pamela and Beth, and multiple nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Jane, his mother Gladys, his sister Jessica, and his close friend Forrest Hollifield, who was killed during the Vietnam War.

A celebration of life gathering will be held at a later date.

If you would like to honor George, please consider a donation to Vietnam Veterans of America, 8719 Colesville Road, Suite 100, Silver Spring, MD 20910.
