Obituary for Doris Brooks Moore

Doris Ruth Brooks Moore
July 17, 1927 – October 15, 2022

Mrs. Doris Ruth Brooks Moore, age 95, of 1044 Jackson Street went home to be
with Jesus October 15, 2022.

Doris was born July 17, 1927, in Pendleton SC to Alonzo and Louvenie Brooks. In 1932, after her mom contracted tuberculosis (TB), Doris was moved from her home to a children's facility located in Columbia, SC (as was customary back when TB was pervasive). Because Doris was only 5 and much younger than the other children there, she was assigned by herself to an attic sleeping room. And due to the rules in place at the facility, she was not allowed to go outside, and could only watch out her window at the older children playing in the yard below. Additionally, because long-distance automobile travel during that time was difficult at best, she was separated for many months at a time from her family by hundreds of miles for a full year. Nevertheless, she persevered. This resilience foreshadowed the quiet and calming inner strength she became known for throughout her life.

After her mom passed when Doris was 6, her father married Maude G. Smith. Together they lovingly raised Doris and her brothers Lonnie and Lloyd. Doris thrived growing up in the vibrant Pendleton Mill Hill community where she fell in love and married her life-partner Vernon E. Moore. They remained a dedicated couple until Vernon passed in May 2004. Doris worked in the textile industry while she and Vernon raised their seven children: Jimmy, Carol, Marlene, Darrell, Tracy, Terry, and Sherri. Doris was the quintessential matriarch; she lived for her family. Generous, loving, and firm, her devotion was never questioned. Over the years she became "Mom" to countless friends and extended family as she opened her heart and home to those needing a respite from life's struggles.

Doris is preceded in eternity by her father Alonzo, mother Louvenie, stepmother Maude, brothers Lloyd Brooks (Doris) and Lonnie Brooks (Alice), husband Vernon, daughter Tracy Logan (Tony), great-grandson Carter Powell, sons-in-law Joe Ownbey and Ronald Lamb, and grandson-in-law Jason Lowe.

She is survived by sons Jimmy (Joyce), Darrell (Sherry), and Terry; daughters Carol Ownbey, Marlene Campbell (Larry) and Sherri Lamb; 18 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
