Deuel Norton Griffin, 88, of Anderson, SC, passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2023. He was born May 27, 1935, in Shawmut, Alabama, to the late John Hurshel Griffin and the late Nola Gosnell Griffin.

He was predeceased by his brother, Herman Douglas Griffin.

He is survived by his niece Dale Haynie Ducworth (George) and four great nephews William Austin Ducworth (Leigh), Charles Edward Ducworth (Brooke), Griffin Harrison Ducworth, and Benjamin Hunter Ducworth as well as his sister-in-law Mozelle Acker.

A 1953 graduate of Boys High School in Anderson, Deuel also graduated from Anderson Junior College, Erskine College, and obtained a master’s degree from Duke University.

Deuel was bright, accomplished and had a significant impact on his many students while serving as an English professor at Clemson University for 27 years and at Erskine College 5 years prior to that. He earned the respect of other professors as an expert in the area of children’s literature. Deuel presented at conferences for training teachers as well as presented essays in his area of expertise at the annual Modern Language Association meetings. He continued to enjoy the friendships of his colleagues at Clemson long after he retired.

Deuel was creative and artistic as evidenced by the unique creations in his expansive garden, where he spent much of his time. He valued his friendships, many of whom were lifelong, and often spoke of the many people who positively influenced his life.

Deuel was witty, engaging, and loved talking to people from all walks of life and getting to know them. He was a one-of-a-kind person, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00pm, on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at New Silver Brook Cemetery in Anderson. Rev. Dr. L. Thomas Richie will officiate.
