Obituary for Deborah Morehead

Deborah Morehead
November 12, 1955- February 14, 2023

Deborah Jane Morehead, 67, of Easley, SC, died Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.

Born in Seneca, SC, she was a daughter of the late William Luke Morehead, and the late Mary Broome Morehead.

Deborah was a student, and an artist throughout her college years, and attended The University of Georgia, Anderson University, and Truett McConnell University. In her time at Truett McConnell University, Deborah co-created a patent on a soft sculpture doll, and from that Little People Dolls were created, and became a worldwide phenomenon. Deborah is regarded as the “First Mother” of the original line of Cabbage Patch Dolls known as, Little People. She was an award-winning artist, and specialized in watercolor, and pen and ink. After her Cabbage Patch Doll success, Deborah became ill and had to retire. A piece of her work is hanging in the South Carolina Department of Mental Health, and her beloved Little People Dolls are still in many homes worldwide. Deborah always strived to love and was loved by everyone who knew her. It was only fitting that she passed away on Valentine’s Day. A quote she had hanging on her wall was, “Love doesn’t make the world go round, but it makes the ride worthwhile”.

She is survived by her siblings, Susan Delores Matheson & Michael Hinton Morehead, along with her nieces and nephews, Tommy Hix, Amanda Matheson, Bethany Matheson, Eric Matheson, Tory Morehead, Isaac Morehead, and Alexis Morehead. Also surviving are her caregivers at The Village, and Easley Retirement Center, who became a part of her family.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Edith Dianne Hix.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to United Way of Anderson Clubhouse Project, 604 N Murray Ave, Anderson, SC 29625, NAMI-SC, P.O. Box 1267, Columbia, SC, 29202-1267, or to a charity of your choice.
