Obituary for Deborah Cullen Metteer

Deborah Cullen Metteer

May 10, 1950 – November 29,2022

Deborah Cullen Metteer of Anderson, S.C., passed away peacefully in the early hours of Tuesday, November 29, at her home.

She was born May 10, 1950, in Glens Falls, N.Y., to Thomas Lincoln Harrocks and Shirlee Ann(Hughes) Harrocks. She lived much of her young life in Warren, N.J., and attended Watchung Hills schools. She moved with her mother and sister to San Diego and attended Point Loma High School. She later earned an Associate Degree at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, Calif.

Deborah was preceded in death by her parents and a stepmother, Winifred Scully Harrocks, and by her sister Dale Hughes Fillmer of Beauregard, Alabama. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Christopher Metteer of Anderson; a daughter, Michelle Metteer of Minturn, Colorado; and sons Michael of Anderson and Stephen of Talent, Oregon; son-in-law Alex Grab of Minturn Colorado; granddaughter Madeline Grab of Minturn, and grandsons Aidan and Easton Metteer of Anderson.

She was a wonderful woman, wife, mother, lover, mentor, and tough-as-nails advocate for those she loved. Her children remember her fondly for her steadfast devotion and love. Her husband gives her credit for raising three outstanding children because he worked evenings, which left all the child-raising duties to Debbie. She had a special combination of a strong will and compassionate nature.

Debbie worked as an educational aide specializing in special education at the Thurston School District in Springfield, Oregon, the South Lane School District in Cottage Grove, Oregon, and the Douglas County School District in Parker Colorado. She displayed the same skills with her students that she did with her own kids. She retired in 2016 to end a distinguished career of more than 30 years.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 6, in the Tribute Room of the Standard Cremation & Funeral Center, 1621 Pearman Dairy Road, Anderson, SC, 29625. Her husband and family members will speak during the service. The family will be available to meet guests after the service.

Condolences can be sent to The Standard Cremation & Funeral Center, which is serving the Metteer family in this time of need, at www.standardfuneralcenter.com.
