Obituary for Connie Hayes

Connie Vermillion Hayes was born in Anderson, SC on August 22, 1937. She was the daughter of Rubye Fletcher and Howard Vermillion.

Connie lived in Anderson until she was 80 years old and moved to St. Petersburg, FL for the remaining 5 years of her life with her cat Ollie. She died on January 26, 2023 of natural causes.

Connie was married to John David Hayes for over 40 years and they settled in Flat Rock on Hayes Road. They had three children: Temple Hayes (BB) (Santa Barbara, CA), Nelson Hayes (Tracy) (Anderson) and John Hayes (Miranda) (Piedmont). Through the years, the family grew to 7 grandchildren: Chandler Hayes (Sara), Collin Ripley Hayes (Tiffany), Ian McKenzie Hayes (deceased) Josie Elizabeth Hayes Derrick (Ben), Quintin John Thomas Hayes, Ethan Lane Allen Hayes, Madelyn Brooke Hayes and 7 great-grandchildren: Maverick Derrick, Colton Lewter, Axel Hayes, Aiden Hayes, Gil Vestal , Harper Rose (Rosie) Hayes, Molly-Kate Hayes. Also Connie’s other chosen daughter Teresa Vaughn (caregiver) and her daughter Miracle. (St Petersburg, FL)

Connie had many favorite things. She told each child they were her favorite. She loved and adored her brother Dan. Her favorite film was Steel Magnolias, her favorite channel was Lifetime, her favorite actor was John Travolta (slight crush) and her greatest singer was Elvis Presley whom she saw in the very beginnings of his career. Her priority was always family.

Connie was an employee of Southern Weaving Corporation most of her adult life where she created a chosen family. Friends who became such dear friends for life just like her dear friends on Hayes Road. She was a magnet, always attracting people who stayed in her life for a lifetime.

After she retired, she helped her daughter Temple do telephone wellness checks with shut- ins with her ministry in Florida.

She is preceded in death by her husband John David Hayes and her parents. Remaining is her sister-in-law Brenda Council and her husband James.She also has many nieces and nephews.

Connie accomplished what everyone dreams of, to make the world a better place because she lived. Thank you for blessing us with your love, your smile and your light. There’s a saying that people die twice, when they die and when they stop saying your name. Connie, as long as we live, you will live through us.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 16, 2023, from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at The Standard Cremation & Funeral Center, 1621 Pearman Dairy Rd., Anderson, S.C. 29625.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, February 17, 2023, in The Tribute Room of The Standard Cremation & Funeral Center, with a graveside ceremony to follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

The family will be at the residence of Nelson and Tracy Hayes,101 Worthington Court, Anderson, SC 29621.

The family would prefer donations be made to the Anderson County Humane Society.
