Charles got the land where the Beatrice Thompson park is located on West Market Street donated to the city of Anderson. There is a beautiful park there now, thanks to Charles. Too bad it is not named after him. Charles and a friend are solely responsible for us having the Anderson City Park on Hartwell Lake at Manse Jolly Road and Hwy. 178. Charles negotiated an extremely generous lease with the Army Corps of Engineers, something like a 99-year lease for $1. Thanks mostly to Charles, Anderson residents have had a beautiful beach to enjoy for all these years. Not everyone on the Anderson City Council was in favor of the deal, but Charles persuaded enough to vote for it. It now bears the name of Darwin Wright, former mayor. It's a shame that Charles' name is not on that park somewhere. We would not have that park if not for Charles. Charles got a lot done for the City of Anderson at almost zero cost to the taxpayers. That was because he had ideas, he was a thinker, he had visions of ways to improve Anderson. I read recently that Charles got the land donated to the county for the original Anderson County Animal Shelter on Hwy. 28. I was not aware of that. I guess I was not aware because Charles was not one to seek credit for the things he did. We need more men like Charles Crowe, don't we? Dan Snipes, friend.
