Obituary for Amos Butler Nanney, Jr.

Amos Butler Nanney, Jr., 84, went home to be with the Lord on November 8th, 2022. He was a loving husband for 60 years to his late wife, Lunette Anderson Nanney.

Butler was born in Henrietta, NC and moved to Chester, SC at an early age. He was a son of the late Amos Butler Nanney, Sr. and the late Donnis Gamble Nanney. He graduated from Chester High School in 1956 after receiving many honors from playing sports, such as representing South Carolina in the Shrine Bowl in 1955. He received his Honorable discharge from the United States Army in August of 1961, and on the next day, he married his high school sweetheart, Lunette, who was the love of his life. After their marriage, they returned to Clemson where Butler graduated in Textile Manufacturing. He spent his entire working career with Springs Industries in Kershaw, Lancaster, Fort Mill, Fort Lawn, and Chester. He retired in 2000 from Springs as a plant manager of Wamsutta and Joe Lyons Plants in Anderson, SC.

He was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church in Chester where he was a former deacon and Sunday school teacher. After his move to Anderson with Springs, he was a faithful member of Meadowbrook Baptist Church where he also taught Sunday school. Butler was a strong Christian and devoted family man. He took care of his family and loved teaching his children and grandchildren by giving them “words of wisdom” from the Bible and from his experiences. He was generous in sharing with others, loved singing gospel music, and enjoyed working on all types of projects in his garage.

He is survived by his daughter Renay Motte (Bill), his son Tripp Nanney (Jamie); his daughter Susan Parker (Tim); grandchildren Forrest Nanney, Cole Nanney, Meredith Hancock (Matthew), and James Parker. In addition to his wife Lunette, he is predeceased by a brother, Don Roger Nanney and a sister, Nadine Nanney Laughter.
